Role Overview

The Head Grower is responsible for leading and optimizing high-tech hydroponic greenhouse production, ensuring high yields, consistent product quality, and energy-efficient operations. The role covers full crop responsibility, including climate strategy, artificial lighting, fertigation, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and production team coordination, aligned with sustainability and cost-efficiency objectives.

 

Main responsibilities:

    • Lead and manage the full hydroponic crop production cycle, ensuring high yields, consistent quality, and stable year-round performance.
    • Develop and implement crop steering strategies adapted to high-tech greenhouse environments (Venlo and/or semi-closed systems).
    • Define and oversee climate control strategies, including temperature, humidity, VPD, CO₂ enrichment, supplemental lighting, ventilation management, and screen control.
    • Design and optimize fertigation and irrigation programs, including nutrient recipes, EC/pH control, drain management, recirculation, and root-zone performance.
    • Monitor crop, climate, and production data using greenhouse control systems (e.g., Priva, Hoogendoorn, or similar platforms).
    • Lead and implement IPM programs focused on prevention, biological control, and compliance with food safety and residue standards.
    • Organize and supervise daily greenhouse operations, including labor planning, team leadership, SOP implementation, hygiene protocols, and operational discipline.
    • Ensure full traceability, compliance with certification schemes and adherence to internal quality standards.
    • Contribute to production budgeting, cost control, energy optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Support greenhouse commissioning, start-up phases, and scaling of production capacity, ensuring smooth operational ramp-up.

 

Knowledge:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field.
    • Experience with greenhouse climate control and automation systems (e.g. Priva, Hoogendoorn, or similar platforms) is a strong advantage.
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role.
    • Strong understanding of safety, compliance, and operational regulations.
    • Good communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
    • High attention to detail and commitment to quality and operational excellence.
    • Professional proficiency in English.
